Integrating Physical Activity & Mental Wellbeing Support

The Purpose

A significant proportion of young adults in the UK experience mental health problems.

Since 2022, figures shown that 22% of 17 - 21 year olds had a probable mental disorder.

Studies and surveys indicate that rates of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions are elevated in this age group.

Exercise Based Solutions for...

Reduced Anxiety

Research consistently demonstrates that exercise, particularly aerobic activities, can effectively reduce symptoms of anxiety. Exercise promotes the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin, which plays a crucial role in mood regulation.

Stress Management

Exercise helps to regulate the body's stress response system. It reduces the levels of stress hormones like cortisol and increases the release of endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects.

Positive Outcomes

Research supports the idea that exercise can be as effective as other treatments, such as medication or therapy, for certain conditions, particularly mild to moderate depression and anxiety

How do we work?

Recognising the powerful link between physical activity and mental wellbeing, we offer targeted interventions to students who can benefit from a different kind of support. By integrating physical activity into mental health support, we aim to dramatically improve outcomes for learners, enrich their educational journey, and pave the way for greater success.

The most dangerous phrase in the language is "we've always done it this way"

"In some cases, interventions to tackle the triggers of a person’s distress, or encouraging them to access activities which improve mood and wellbeing such as the arts, physical activity, or nature, may be most effective."

Step 1
Assessment & Consultation:
Conduct initial consultations and meetings with relevant stakeholders (e.g., wellbeing support teams, school staff) to:

> Evaluate current mental health support provisions.

> Identify existing service gaps and areas for improvement.

> Determine how physical activity interventions can complement current offerings.

Step 2
Student Identification and Selection:

Identify students who would benefit from physical activity interventions by:

> Reviewing records of students who have reported experiencing poor mental health.

> Identifying at-risk students who may require alternative or additional support.

> Collaborating with student support staff to ensure appropriate referrals.

Step 3
Intervention Delivery and Monitoring:

Develop and implement a tailored delivery plan for each student, focusing on:

> Providing structured physical activity interventions over a period of 8-12 weeks.

> Setting clear, measurable goals to improve student outcomes and promote positive mental health.

> Regularly monitoring student progress and adapting the plan as needed.
